🦀Savor the taste of summer with our delicious soft shell crab sandwich recipe, featuring fresh, locally sourced crabs, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, served on a toasted bun with zesty slaw and tangy aioli!

Fried Soft Shell Crab Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 4 soft shell crabs, cleaned

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup arrowroot flour

  • 2 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • Cooking oil spray (for air fryer) or 4 tablespoons of cooking oil (for cast iron pan)

  • Lemon wedges, for serving

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)


Instructions:


Prepare the Egg Wash and Coating:

In a bowl, whisk the eggs until well combined.

In a separate shallow dish, combine the arrowroot flour, Old Bay seasoning, salt, and black pepper.


Live Soft Shells

Coat the Crabs:

  • Dip each soft shell crab into the egg wash, making sure it's fully coated.

  • Dredge the crab in the arrowroot flour mixture, ensuring an even coating. Shake off any excess flour.


Cooking Method 1: Air Fryer

  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).

  • Spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil spray.

  • Place the coated crabs in a single layer in the air fryer basket.

  • Lightly spray the top of the crabs with cooking oil.

  • Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the crabs are golden brown and crispy.


Cooking Method 2: Cast Iron Pan

  • Heat the cooking oil in a cast iron pan over medium-high heat.

  • Once the oil is hot, carefully place the crabs in the pan.

  • Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  • Transfer the cooked crabs to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.


Serve:

Serve the soft shell crabs hot with lemon wedges and a sprinkle of fresh parsley if desired.
